Mrs. Loew

This month in:

Mrs. Loew’s 7th Grade

English Language Arts and Writing Class

We are very busy learning about the Holocaust and preparing for our upcoming novel The Devil’s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen. In preparation of our Reading Unit on the Holocaust, we will be reading the picture book The Butterfly By Patricia Polacco, analyzing excerpts from Elie Wiesel’s The Night, and taking part in a Gallery Walk that analyzes major essential questions dealing with The Holocaust. During our study of our class novel of The Devil’s Arithmetic, we will be focusing on the author’s use of symbolism, foreshadowing, allusions and figurative language all of which help contribute to deeper meaning.

In writing we will be diving into the genre of Inform and Explain (Expository Writing). We will be doing a variety of ”Write Now” mini lessons to generate writing topics that inform and explain. We will be using modeled writing to become better writers in this genre. We will take two writing topics through the Writing Process and publish them. We are currently doing a Creative Expository Writing Assignment that involves creating our own hybrid animal. Later in the trimester we will be working on Biographies.

In Grammar we will continue our study with pronouns and then enter the world of verbs and verb tenses! We continue to love Grammar Challenges and do them every chance we get!

Important Reminders

1. Weekly Articles will continue into the new year. Each week there will be new directions given.
2. Spelling Tests are every other week on a Friday.
3. It is important to review and study Grammar notes given in class each day.

We have sent out our paper cranes and friendly letters to our new friends in Italy. We are waiting for a response back and hope to start a pen pal relationship with them beginning this new year!
