8th Grade Immigration Simulation

"New Immigrants" Proud to Become Americans
After completing a unit on immigration during the early 1900's, students researched their ancestors, created placards and participated in a simulation on what it felt like to go through Ellis Island and become a citizen.  Some students had jobs assigned to them, such as doctors and immigration officials while others portrayed their own ancestors.  Several students made it through the process to take the Pledge of Allegiance to our great country.  Others learned that they were being turned away due to disease or lack of money that would allow them to assimilate into our country. The simulation allowed students to experience a small part of what trials the early immigrants had to face.
